Chelsea defeated Real Madrid 3-2 at Stamford Bridge as the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage got underway.

Group A: Lyon 3-0 Galatasaray, Roma 1-0 Wolfsburg

Group B: Chelsea 3-2 Real Madrid, Celtic 0-2 FC Twente

Chelsea were ahead inside two minutes, as Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross seemed to have brought an own-goal off the head of Sheila Garcia but was given to Sjoeke Nüsken.

The lead was doubled from the spot before the half-hour mark, Guro Reiten drilling into the bottom corner.

Alba Redondo had been denied by Blues’ keeper Zecira Musovic but did beat her before the break.

Seven minutes into the second half the two-goal cushion was restored, Lauren James cross met with a looping header from Mayra Ramirez.

The visitors made for a tense finish with a second goal seven minutes from time, Lucy Bronze clearing off the line but Linda Caidcedo on hand to put away the loose ball.

Celtic went behind against FC Twente just before half time, caught out by a ball over the top, Kayleigh van Dooren lobbed goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty

The Dutch side got a late second, as Van Dooren doubled her tally for the night.

Kadidiatou Diani scored in either half and Vanessa Gilles got Lyon’s other goal, as they beat Galatasaray 3-0.

Manuela Giuliano’s early penalty was enough to see Roma defeat Wolfsburg.
