Chennedy Carter is among the sought-after WNBA free agents in 2025. Initially signing a one-year, $76.5K training camp contract with the Chicago Sky, she became a pivotal player for the team. Carter retains the option to play elsewhere if the Sky fail to meet offer demands.
Recently, Carter stirred speculation about her future after reacting to a Russell Westbrook interview criticizing his past teams for mismanaging him position-wise.
Chennedy Carter shared on X, previously Twitter:
“ngl i felt this !!!! lol.”
Prior to her Chicago stint, Carter faced a suspension from the Atlanta Dream for “conduct detrimental to the team.” This marked the end of her tenure with the Dream as she was subsequently traded to the LA Sparks in 2022.
Similar issues surfaced during Carter’s time with the Sparks. After playing 24 games predominantly as a substitute, she was released by the team in 2023, as reported by the LA Times citing “poor conduct.”
The Chicago Sky took a chance on Chennedy Carter in 2024, a move that proved beneficial for both sides. However, the team’s coaching change from Teresa Weatherspoon to Tyler Marsh amidst Carter’s free agency raises concerns.
Chennedy Carter expressed interest in staying in Chicago, but GM Jeff Pagliocca’s stance was undecided
During Chennedy Carter’s final press conference in 2024, she expressed her desire to be in a place where she is valued. According to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Carter stated:
“I love being here. I enjoyed the season. It was fun. It was special. If Chicago wants me back, I’m interested in coming back.”
Chicago Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca remained noncommittal on re-signing Carter:
“She was very valuable. Obviously, she’s a player that can impact the game at the highest level in this league. She’s a player we’re going to make sure we keep an eye on and engage when it’s time.”
As per Poe, Chicago intends to offer Carter a qualifying offer once free agent negotiations are allowed. Should a team present a more enticing offer that the Sky choose not to match, Carter’s departure is imminent.
Selected as the No. 4 pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, Carter led the Sky in scoring last season with a career-high 17.5 points per game. She also contributed 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
With Tyler Marsh leading the team, the Sky may aim to enhance their 3-point shooting. Lagging in attempts (12.0 3PA) and efficiency (32.3%), areas where Carter struggled, improvement is a focus. Carter’s subpar 29.0% 3-point shooting last season underscores the need for improvement in this aspect.
The future will unveil whether Carter will remain in Chicago for the upcoming season.
