CHICAGO – Look up the top 15 scorers in the league and you’ll find a list of perennial All-Stars, WNBA champions, and Chennedy Carter.
Carter may seem out of place, especially considering she started the season coming off the bench, but she was drafted fourth overall just four years ago and never found her footing until now.
“The one thing about Chennedy – and I actually spoke to her about this yesterday – is she is coachable. That’s why you see what you see,” noted Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. “I coach Chennedy hard. I coach her extremely hard because I can. She responds. She responds to it because she knows I’m not asking her to do something that she can’t do. This is a guard that can do anything. She does whatever she wants to out there and it’s hard to stop it. I coach her hard because I want nothing but greatness from her every night.
“I’m just going to tell you guys this again – you can write it, you can print it, you can do whatever you want to – that’s our All-Star right there.”
“I’ve been in situations where I haven’t always been valued. Coaches haven’t always had my back. She has my back on and off the floor,” explained Carter after sharing a hug with Weatherspoon. “That brings out the best side of me. That brings out me as a person. Everyone is getting to know me. I love my teammates. I love being here. We’re building something special. I’m so thankful to be a part of something like this. Two years coming, I’m really thankful to be a part of something like this. I was literally crying in the car yesterday like, ‘God, I appreciate you so much for putting me where I belong.’”
Carter is on a hot streak as the Olympic break approaches. She has scored 15 points or more for ten straight games and dropped double digits all but twice so far this season.
