Unrestricted free agent Chennedy Carter recently opened up about what’s next for her after the Chicago Sky didn’t give her a qualifying offer. Carter was coming off an impressive season after sitting out the entire 2023 campaign. She was the best scorer for the Sky, but it seems like there were internal problems in the locker room.
Speaking to her fans on Twitter Spaces, Carter answered some questions about free agency. She’s free to negotiate with any team and is eligible to sign a contract starting on Feb. 1. She’s currently playing for the Wuhan Shengfan in the WCBA in China.
Carter shared that she’s scheduled to have a meeting with a top team in two days while other teams are also showing interest.
“I have a meeting with a team in two days but that’s all I’m going to give you just because everybody thinks that oh I’m not going to do this. I have a meeting with the team in two days that I’m potentially interested in. There’s a couple of top teams too that are interested,” she said. [15:27 onwards]
She’s one of the best scorers available on the market this offseason, averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Some Chicago Sky fans were baffled by the team’s decision to not give Chennedy Carter a qualifying offer. Others questioned why the Sky would let their best scorer from last season walk away for nothing.
Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that there were issues in the Sky locker room last season due to Carter’s behavior. Former coach Teresa Weatherspoon allegedly let things slide, which caused some internal chaos.
The franchise decided to let Carter go because re-signing her might have impacted their chances of landing other players in free agency. The former No. 4 pick has a history of attitude issues during her time with the Atlanta Dream and LA Sparks.
As for teams linked to Carter, The Athletic’s Sabreena Merchant predicted the Golden State Valkyries as her destination.
Chicago Sky general manager releases statement on Chennedy Carter
While the Chicago Sky fanbase is seemingly divided on the team’s decision on Chennedy Carter, general manager Jeff Pagliocca broke his silence on the matter. Pagliocca released a statement via the Chicago Sun-Times regarding letting Carter go into free agency.
“Chennedy had an incredible season for us last year,” Pagliocca said. “She’s extremely talented and is a player that can impact the game at the highest level in our league. We absolutely appreciate all she did for our team last year. However, we’ve made changes to our staff and will make changes to our roster. Those changes impact Chennedy’s fit on the team, so we wanted to give her the best opportunity as a free agent.”
Carter also recently drew the ire of Angel Reese’s fans after making a social media post about “making layups.” The fanbase thought that she was taking shots at Reese, who was notoriously known for missing layups last season.
