Chennedy Carter Sets Out on a Physical Mission After Securing China Move With Chicago Future in Doubt

Chennedy Carter has been a boon for the struggling Chicago Sky, especially playing alongside rookies Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Since joining the Sky’s roster, Carter’s career has been on the upswing. However, with free agency on the horizon, the uncertainty of her future with the team lingers. Despite hints and attempts at reassurance, a definitive answer is still pending. In the meantime, Carter has been keeping herself busy with other activities.

Recent posts on Carter’s Instagram story show her dedicated to weightlifting during the offseason. A picture of the Sky’s guard flaunting her abs with the caption “Grind Morning” indicates her commitment to physical fitness. This is a side pursuit for Carter as she prepares to join Wuhan Shengfan (WCBA) in China for the upcoming offseason.

Saying goodbye to the Sky would be a difficult decision for Carter, given how the franchise has revitalized her career. The 2020 WNBA draft No. 4 pick by the Atlanta Dream has excelled with the Sky, averaging a career-high 17.5 points and shooting 48.7% from the field in 20 games, along with 3.5 rebounds.

Sky’s GM Jeff Pagliocca acknowledged Carter’s value to the team and expressed interest in retaining her services for the future. Carter, in turn, is open to continuing with the Sky if the opportunity arises.

Before departing for China, Carter shared a bittersweet sentiment about leaving Chicago. Her experience in the Chinese league with the Heilongjiang Dragons last year has led to another stint in China this season. Despite her willingness to return to the Sky, Carter remains in a state of anticipation for an official decision. Her recent foot injury, which caused her to miss the final four games of the season, may be a factor in the uncertainty. Nevertheless, as one chapter in the WNBA closes, another begins in the WCBA for Carter, where she will focus on physical improvement while awaiting a team that truly values her presence.
