Chicago Sky Coach Admits It’s Time for a Kamilla Cardoso Change originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

On Sunday, the Chicago Sky lost their fifth straight game, dropping to 7-18 on the season after a 93-78 loss to the Indiana Fever at home at the United Center.

With forward Angel Reese out injured — Fever star Caitlin Clark also missed the sell-out game — the spotlight shifted to Chicago’s other 2024 first-round draft pick in the frontcourt, Kamilla Cardoso.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was somewhat effective against the Fever, but it was not enough to overcome the absences of key playmakers in Reese (back), leading scorer Ariel Atkins (leg) and rookie guard Hailey Van Lith (ankle). Veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot (knee) is also out for the season.

Cardoso had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, but five turnovers matched her season high. Guard Rachel Banham led the team with 26 points in the losing effort.

Marsh Calls for Cardoso Change

Chicago head coach Tyler Marsh praised Cardoso’s effort and energy, but he was honest that the “days are gone” of being able to get the 6-foot-7 center easy looks in the paint — with or without Reese next to her.

After the loss, he took responsibility to step up his play-calling and creativity to get the most out of Cardoso.

“Teams are making it more and more difficult to get regular easy post entries into her,” Marsh said of Cardoso.

“I’m not afraid to put people in different positions to try to be successful. We’re going to continue to put her in different positions. The days of just sitting her on the block and throwing it in, those days are probably gone.”

Lessons From Angel Reese’s Development This Season

As he referenced, Marsh has found success in developing new aspects of Reese’s game. The steady improvement of her perimeter ball-handling and playmaking abilities in her sophomore season have helped open up Chicago’s offense. Her assists per game (3.7) have nearly doubled under Marsh compared to last season (1.9).

Improvement for Cardoso will be more reliant on teammates, including Reese, getting her the ball. If Marsh can replicate a similar development plan that he found to change Reese’s game, it would pay dividends for the Sky.

Chicago currently ranks 11th out of 13 WNBA teams in points per game (76.7) for the entire 2025 season. During their five-game losing streak, they are averaging just 66 points per game.
