The Kansas City Chiefs’ bye week has concluded, with the team returning to practice on Wednesday ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs’ Week 6 bye marks their earliest break since the 2016 season.
“We’ve normally had them [around the] ninth week or plus — somewhere in that area,” said head coach Andy Reid. “Our schedule is crazy enough where you’re going to get some days off, and it’s important to take advantage of those days, so that’s what I would tell you.”
Kansas City infamously plays every day of the week except Tuesday during its 2024 schedule.
“It was good to get this [break],” added Reid, “and then how we handle the rest of the schedule is the important part, and when we have time, make sure you take the time for recovery purposes.”
During his Monday Zoom presser, Reid alluded to players being given the week off, but defensive end Mike Danna stuck around to work through a pectoral strain. That injury kept him out of practice on Wednesday.
The Chiefs (in terms of their active roster) are otherwise healthy. That includes running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who missed the first five games of the season on the non-football injury (NFI) list. It is unclear whether Edwards-Helaire will be active against the 49ers.
“We’ll just see how that goes and how it all works in,” said Reid. “We got to look at everything on that — special teams, etc. [Edwards-Helaire’s] good to go at practice. He knows what he’s doing. He’s feeling great, which is the most important thing.”
If Danna cannot play, expect an uptick in snaps for second-year defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who was on the field for 46% of snaps when Danna was out in Week 4. Typically, Anudike-Uzomah is on the field for around 20% of the defense’s snaps.
