The viewership numbers for the premiere episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” remain unknown, but ESPN’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo did not tune in.
Russo criticized the Giants and NFL Films on First Take, expressing discontent over the team’s final say in the editing process of the docuseries.
“I wouldn’t watch that even if I had insomnia,” Russo remarked. “It’s absurd that the Giants have editorial control over a show that is meant to capture the behind-the-scenes of a football team during the offseason.”
The revelation that the Giants had editing authority was disclosed during the “Giants 100: A Night with Legends” event, where general manager Joe Schoen discussed their involvement in the show.
Russo continued his criticism, emphasizing that allowing the team to dictate what viewers see compromises the authenticity of the series.
However, Russo failed to acknowledge that the Giants’ editing power is limited to situations where revealing certain footage could harm their competitive advantage, not the entire series.
Considering the unconventional nature of this season’s “Hard Knocks,” it is reasonable for the Giants to protect sensitive information that could impact their performance.
There should be boundaries to maintain fairness and prevent any disruption to the competitive balance, a point that Russo seems to overlook, especially given the Giants’ struggles.
