The Brewers announced today that Christian Yelich has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to lower back inflammation. Gary Sanchez has been activated from the IL to take Yelich’s spot on the roster.
Yelich left yesterday’s game against the Cubs with back tightness, and the situation has taken a more serious turn this morning. He is set to see a specialist, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and Yelich’s comments hint at a potentially significant absence.
“We will see what’s best for the near future and beyond,” Yelich said regarding his visit to a back specialist. “There are a few discussions that need to be had.”
Yelich, 32, has been on the rise since his production dipped in 2020-21. He has shown improvement in the past three seasons, with a strong .315/.406/.504 batting line in the current season. Despite his outstanding performance, his recent injury has raised concerns about his availability.
The Brewers have several outfield options to replace Yelich, such as Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Blake Perkins. In addition, Joey Wiemer has been performing well in Triple-A, with a high walk rate and on-base percentage. Brewer Hicklen, a recent addition to the roster, has been impressive in Triple-A Nashville.
It is unclear how long Yelich will be sidelined, but with the trade deadline approaching, his absence could impact the Brewers’ decisions. They may be more cautious about trading young outfielders and could consider adding a bat to strengthen the lineup. Yelich’s versatility as a designated hitter also creates opportunities for a new hitter to contribute.
While starting pitching remains a priority for the Brewers, Yelich’s injury poses a challenge for the team. His absence may prompt them to explore various options to enhance their lineup and offset his absence.
