Cincinnati native and former Ohio State basketball star Kelsey Mitchell has been selected to her second career WNBA All-Star team, joining a star-studded roster that also includes her Indiana Fever teammate and rookie sensation Caitlin Clark. The 28-year-old Mitchell leads the Fever in scoring this season with 16.3 points per game, narrowly ahead of Clark’s 16.2 points and Aliyah Boston’s 13.1 points. All three Fever players will participate in the WNBA All-Star Game, set to take place July 20 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. This year’s exhibition will pit the WNBA players who were selected for the US Olympic team against the remaining WNBA All-Stars. Mitchell, along with Clark, Boston and another rookie sensation Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, will be among the stars on the latter team. Drafted second overall by the Fever in the 2018 WNBA Draft out of Ohio State, Mitchell has been a consistent scorer across seven seasons, averaging just over 16 points per game. Since 2022, the former Princeton High School standout has raised her scoring average to 17.8 points per game, culminating in her first All-Star selection in 2023. Mitchell has averaged at least 17 points per game each season since 2020, shooting 38 percent from three and 84 percent from the free throw line in that timeframe. Before her WNBA career, Mitchell was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Year at Ohio State, a first-team AP All-American in 2016 and the recipient of the Dawn Staley Award, given annually to the nation’s best guard, in 2018 with the Buckeyes. Mitchell led Princeton to a Division I state championship during her senior season and was a McDonald’s All-American before beginning her college career at Ohio State in 2014. Mitchell will be included in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game alongside several other premier talents in the sport, including those who will make up the Olympic team for the games that begin in Paris later this month. Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum are among the headliners of Team USA, while Nneka Ogwumike, DeWanna Bonner, Clark, Boston and Reese are among those set to compete against them during All-Star festivities. The Fever’s three selections to the game are tied for the second-most along with the Connecticut Sun, the New York Liberty and the host Phoenix Mercury.
