Professional boxer Claressa Shields is scheduled to make her return to the ring on Sunday, February 2nd. The event will be streamed on DAZN and will take place in her hometown of Flint, Michigan.
Shields, with a record of 15-0 and 3 knockouts, will be defending her WBC heavyweight title against Danielle Perkins, who holds a record of 5-0 with 2 knockouts. Perkins, a 42-year-old who began her professional career at the age of 37 in 2020, will face a tough challenge against the highly skilled Shields.
While some may question Perkins’ chances of victory, the reality is that Shields is considered one of the greatest women’s boxers of all time. Barring any unforeseen circumstances like injury or miraculous turn of events, Perkins is unlikely to defeat Shields.
Shields’ dominance in the boxing world has led her to be undisputed champion in multiple weight classes. With a lack of worthy opponents in her weight division, Shields has essentially created her own weight class, known as “Claressaweight.” Her unparalleled skill and success in the sport have left her with little motivation to cut weight or seek out additional challenges.
It’s not Shields’ fault that she has surpassed her competition by such a wide margin. She has already defeated every notable opponent in her path.
In her most recent fight in Detroit on July 27th, Shields secured a second round victory over Vanessa Joanisse. The fight featured titles from two weight divisions, highlighting the lack of defined weight classes in women’s boxing.
Perkins, coincidentally, also fought on the same card, winning a decision against Christianne Fahey. With Perkins weighing around 175 pounds for her fight, she will face a significant skill gap against the physically imposing Shields, who has fought opponents weighing close to 200 pounds in the past.
