Flushing Meadows, NY – The 2024 US Open Championships have gotten underway today with the start of singles qualifying play which is set to determine the remaining players in the men’s and women’s singles main draws. Running through Thursday, many former and current college tennis players are looking to claim one of the 16 qualifying spots in the main draw on both the men’s and women’s sides of play.
Of the 128 players across both qualifying draws, 33 have ties back to college tennis, including several players who were on college rosters during the 2023-24 season.
In the men’s draw, Yannick Hanfmann [2] (USC), Valentin Vacherot [13] (Texas A&M) and Alexander Ritschard [31] (Virginia) will be seeded players in the draw as they all currently rank within the Top 150 of the ATP Singles Rankings.
Jacob Fearnley (TCU), Nishesh Basavareddy (Stanford), Eliot Spizzirri (Texas), and Michael Zheng (Columbia) all competed during the 2023-34 college tennis season. Fearnley recently wrapped up his time at TCU by helping lead TCU to their first NCAA Championship title while Spizzirri finished his college career by being named the ITA National Player of the Year for the second year running.
On the women’s side, ten players competing have ties back to college tennis. Two of these players include Emina Betkas [18] (Michigan) and Yuriko Lily Miyazaki [31] (Oklahoma) who both enter qualifying as seeded players. Other names include Yuliia Starodubtseva (Old Dominion), Astra Sharma (Vanderbilt), Mccartney Kessler (Florida), and Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M) to name a few.
Stoiana is another competitor who participated in the 2023-24 college tennis season, winning the ITA All-American Singles Championship finishing the season No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings, and being named the ITA National Player of the Year.
