color Caitlin Clark WNBA owner Athlete of the Year – Black vs White: WNBA Owner Sheila Johnson accuses TIME’s Magazine for naming Caitlin Clark as Athlete of the Year solely because of her color says, ‘witnessed numerous talented players of color not receiving their acknowledgment’

In a bold statement, Sheila Johnson, the owner of the Washington Mystics, expressed her concerns regarding the selection of Caitlin Clark as TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Year. Appearing on CNN, Johnson voiced her belief that this honor fails to capture the collective accomplishments of the entire WNBA. Johnson emphasized the need to recognize the league’s growth and the many players who have contributed to its success over the years.

Caitlin Clark’s Impact on the WNBA

Caitlin Clark’s selection was largely driven by her exceptional 2024 season, during which she made a significant impact on the league. Clark’s influence on the WNBA was especially notable in the economic and fan attendance growth. According to a detailed report by IndyStar, Clark’s performances were responsible for selling one in six WNBA tickets, creating massive crowd turnout both at home and away games. She set a new attendance record, with over 300,000 fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, which became a league milestone.

Many teams, including the Mystics and the Las Vegas Aces, adjusted their venues to larger arenas to accommodate the surge in fan interest generated by Clark’s presence. For example, the Fever’s final regular-season game against the Mystics was held at an NBA arena, drawing a crowd of 20,744, setting a new single-game attendance record.

Johnson Advocates for Recognition of the Entire WNBA

While acknowledging Clark’s contributions, Sheila Johnson argued that the spotlight should not solely be on one player. On CNN, Johnson highlighted the importance of recognizing the WNBA’s growth over nearly three decades, crediting players like Angel Reese, A’ja Wilson, Jonquel Jones, DeWanna Bonner, and Alyssa Thomas for their significant roles in shaping the league.

“It’s not solely about Caitlin Clark; players like Angel Reese and others have significantly contributed to this moment in WNBA history,” she stated. Johnson emphasized that the WNBA was already on a strong upward trajectory long before Clark’s arrival in 2024.

The WNBA’s Remarkable Growth in 2024

According to a Morning Consult study, the WNBA has emerged as the fastest-growing brand of 2024. Johnson also reflected on Clark’s extraordinary economic impact, estimating that her contributions accounted for 26.5% of the league’s financial activities in her rookie season. Additionally, rivalries like the one between Clark and Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese garnered massive media attention, with their matchups becoming some of the season’s most anticipated games.

Concerns Over the Spotlight on Clark

One of Johnson’s major concerns is the potential overshadowing of other deserving players, particularly those of color, in the WNBA. She expressed that the media portrayal needs to change. “It’s the media’s portrayal that needs to change; I’ve witnessed numerous talented players of color not receiving their rightful acknowledgment,” Johnson remarked. “Instead of spotlighting a single player, why not recognize the WNBA as a whole as the league of the year? That would foster unity and respect across the board, avoiding feelings of discontent among players.”

Lexie Brown Defends Caitlin Clark

In response to Johnson’s comments, Los Angeles Sparks guard Lexie Brown took to social media to defend Caitlin Clark. Brown critiqued the notion that the change in venue for Fever games, due to Clark’s popularity, was inappropriate. “To suggest that after moving to bigger arenas for the Fever’s games is simply outrageous,” Brown commented, highlighting Clark’s undeniable influence on the league’s growth.

Clark’s Rise in the Marketing World

Caitlin Clark has not only become a star on the court but also off it, securing significant brand partnerships. She recently signed a $3.5 million annual deal with Nike and is the face of several high-profile campaigns. However, Clark is not the only player benefiting from these opportunities. Angel Reese, who was drafted into the Chicago Sky, has also emerged as a marketing powerhouse, securing deals with Reebok and other brands, including a signature shoe launching in 2026.

Clark Acknowledges the Role of Race in Her Success

Caitlin Clark has openly acknowledged the conversations surrounding race that have surfaced due to her success in a predominantly Black league. “I’ve worked diligently for everything I have achieved, but I do recognize the privilege associated with my race,” Clark explained. She stressed the importance of celebrating the legacy of Black athletes in the WNBA, adding, “Elevating the accomplishments of Black women is vital, and I’m committed to continuing this narrative.”

Fostering Inclusivity in the WNBA

As the WNBA continues to evolve and gain recognition, the ongoing discussions around race and recognition in women’s sports remain critical. Sheila Johnson and others in the league hope that these conversations will lead to greater inclusivity and recognition for all players, ensuring that the accomplishments of Black athletes and others are fully acknowledged. Fans and players alike are urging the league and media to continue celebrating the diverse talent that defines the WNBA.
