Braving the cold weather, and a later start to the morning on the second-last day of Telkom Netball League Power-Week 2 2024, the first game of the day saw the Lilies hosting the Kingdom Stars at the Telkom Netball League in Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 4 June, 2024
The Lilies came out fighting and exhibited a significantly improved performance in the first half of the game, however, the Kingdom Stars showcased their superior skill and emerged victorious.
Following a challenging second power week, Precious Mthembu and her team were in need of a morale-boosting win, but Nthabiseng Mothusi’s troops – who have been making strides, came out demonstrating improved cohesion and synergy.
In a second match, the Tornados came out intend on a confidence-boosting win, and they managed to overcome an inspiring Tshukudu who, despite appearing to struggle at times, continued to bring an exciting surprise element to the league.
With the stakes being high, Lucy Twani had to take to the court with only nine players at her disposal, as their key shooter wasn’t available for the game, making changes in the shooting circle a difficult matter.
In what has been an exciting and eventful tournament for the Comets, who have maintained their top position in Division B, their matchup against the Sonoblomo was surprisingly anything but a walkover.
In the nail-biter of the day, the Sonoblomo put up a good fight until the bitter end, keeping everyone at the edge of their seats at the Ellis Park Arena, but the Comets managed to edge out Sonoblomo by a slim two goals. Credit goes to Sonoblomo for stepping up and giving the Comets a real challenge.
Spar Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk had comment on the netball exhibited during the second last game of the day:
“To be honest, I don’t feel that we’ve seen the best standard of netball displayed in that specific game. I know the potential and abilities of all the players from the two teams, and I feel that we should start seeing a step-up in the standard at this stage,” she encouraged.
