David Brynan, Senior Specialist at Gooding & Company, expressed excitement over the lineup of competition cars for their 20th annual Pebble Beach Auctions. He highlighted the diversity of high-quality racing cars from various eras, including the Sunbeam TT car, European sports racers from the 1950s and 1960s, and modern cars like 935-001 and a MOMO-livery 333 SP.
The 1995 Ferrari 333 SP Evoluzione is a remarkable sports racing prototype developed in collaboration with Dallara and marked Ferrari’s return to international racing. With a state-of-the-art design and impressive technological features, the 333 SP achieved victories in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. Chassis 010, one of only nine Evoluzione models built, had a successful racing career between 1995 and 1997 in the IMSA WSC Championships.
The 1955 Ferrari 857 Sport Spider, chassis 0588 M, has a rich history including races at the Palm Springs National Championship, Stockton Road Races, Pebble Beach Road Races, and the SCCA National. This example was owned by Hollywood’s John Edgar and raced by drivers like Carroll Shelby, achieving impressive results.
The 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage, chassis 2454, was a lightweight and powerful sports racing car that helped Maserati compete in various events. With only 17 examples built, this Birdcage was sold to Loyal Katskee and raced in USAC events across North America.
The 1976 Porsche 935, chassis 935-001, had a successful racing debut at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and later participated in races across North America. After being owned by Vasek Polak and then Matthew Drendel, the car was eventually restored to concours standards by Cavaglieri Restorations.
The 1956 Ferrari 500 TR Scaglietti Spider, chassis 0654 MDTR, was successful in races like the 12 Hours of Reims and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car was later owned by Howard Hively and raced in events like the Governor’s Trophy and the Nassau Trophy.
The 1914 Sunbeam Tourist Trophy Race Car was a pioneer in early 20th-century racing, winning the Tourist Trophy outright and setting records for fastest mountain climbs. The car has undergone restoration and has been actively raced in vintage events by the current owner.
Notable competition Porsches at the auction include a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder with a provenance of just three owners since 1962 and extensive racing history at events like Le Mans and Nürburgring.
