Cooper Flagg impresses NBA legend Kevin Durant

Cooper Flagg added another rare accomplishment to his early NBA resume on Friday night, producing a stat line that continues to separate him from every other 18-year-old who has played in the league.

The Dallas Mavericks rookie finished the 119-111 win over the Brooklyn Nets with 22 points, eight assists, and zero turnovers, marking the second time in his career he has recorded at least 20 points and five assists without committing a turnover. According to the NBA’s official twitter account, those performances are the only two games in NBA history in which an 18-year-old has reached those benchmarks.

The performance places the former Duke star alone in the record books and reinforces how unusual his combination of scoring efficiency and ball control has been at such an early stage of his career.

Flagg’s Latest Performance Stands Alone Historically

Scoring 20 or more points is an accomplishment for any rookie. Doing it while adding at least five assists and committing zero turnovers is far less common, especially for an 18-year-old still adjusting to NBA defenses. Flagg entered the night averaging 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, both ranking 46th in the league, along with 3.4 assists, which ranks 68th.

His eight assists came without forcing passes or overhandling the ball. Flagg consistently found teammates in rhythm, stayed composed against pressure, and avoided the mistakes that often show up when young players are given heavy offensive responsibility.

The historical context makes the performance even more notable. Several elite players entered the NBA as teenagers, including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, and Tracy McGrady. None recorded a game with at least 20 points, five assists, and zero turnovers before turning 19.

Flagg has now done it twice, suggesting the first performance was not a fluke. Instead, it reflects an unusual level of control and efficiency for a player at this stage of his career.

What This Milestone Indicates Moving Forward

Early career milestones do not define a player’s full trajectory, but they can provide insight into how quickly a player is adapting to the league. Flagg’s performances suggest a comfort level with offensive responsibility that typically takes years to develop.

Coaches often emphasize reducing turnovers as one of the biggest growth areas for young players. Flagg achieving zero turnovers while still producing as a scorer and facilitator indicates progress in that area ahead of schedule.

As the season continues, Flagg’s consistency and role will remain important factors. Still, this latest outing adds another measurable achievement to his resume.

For now, the numbers are clear. Flagg has already done something no other 18-year-old in NBA history has accomplished, and he has now done it twice.

Dallas’ season has shifted since with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft taking shape midway through. The Mavericks are currently 10th in the Western Conference, putting them squarely on the playoff bubble as the schedule moves forward. They trail first-place Oklahoma City by 14.5 games, with the Thunder sitting at 24-1.

Dallas has shown signs of life recently, though, winning back-to-back games and six of its last 10 overall.
