The Dallas Mavericks could soon receive a major boost to their lineup. Rookie star Cooper Flagg is expected to return Thursday night when Dallas faces the Orlando Magic, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein.
“The expectation in Orlando now is that Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg WILL indeed play tonight for the first time in nine games, league sources say,” Stein reported.
The 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick has been sidelined for eight games while recovering from a left mid-foot sprain. His absence has been noticeable for a Mavericks team that has struggled to maintain momentum without him.
Dallas went just two wins and six losses during the stretch Flagg missed, highlighting how important the rookie has already become to the team’s rotation.
Flagg’s return appears to be approaching cautiously. He was upgraded to doubtful ahead of Dallas’ loss Tuesday against the Charlotte Hornets before eventually being listed as questionable for the matchup with Orlando.
The expectation is that his minutes will be carefully managed during his first game back.
“The expectation is that he will be eased in on Thursday night before seeing an uptick in minutes Friday at the Boston Celtics,” Yahoo Sports wrote.
The Mavericks will likely take a conservative approach with their franchise cornerstone, especially considering Flagg has already dealt with multiple setbacks this season, including a sprained ankle and a separate illness earlier in the year.
Despite the missed time, the rookie has still produced impressive numbers during his debut campaign.
Through 49 games, Flagg is averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game while emerging as one of the most impactful young players in the league.
His all-around contributions have made him a central piece of Dallas’ long-term plans.
With 21 games remaining in the regular season, the Mavericks currently sit at 21-40. While a playoff push appears unlikely, Flagg’s return gives the organization an opportunity to regain rhythm and continue building around their young cornerstone.
