BOSTON — Tuesday night marked a significant milestone for the Connecticut Sun franchise and the WNBA in Boston.
The Connecticut Sun made history by playing against the Los Angeles Sparks at TD Garden, the home of the NBA champion Boston Celtics. This was the first regular-season WNBA game hosted at the venue, drawing a strong showing of support for the Sun despite their home being over 100 miles away in Uncasville, Conn. The game was sold out with 19,156 tickets purchased, setting a new attendance record for the Sun.
This turnout nearly doubled the usual attendance for a Sun home game, as their arena has a capacity of 10,000. The game also saw the third-highest attendance for a WNBA game this season, with some teams like the Indiana Fever moving games to larger arenas due to high-profile rookies like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Unfortunately, the Sparks’ rookie Cameron Brink was unable to play due to a season-ending ACL injury.
Despite this setback, both teams showcased their star power on the court, highlighting the growth and excitement surrounding the WNBA this season. Sun head coach Stephanie White expressed excitement for the opportunity to play at TD Garden, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and continuing to improve.
“What an exciting opportunity,” said Coach White. “Our players, organization, fans, and the New England area all deserve this. We’re thrilled about this chance, but when the game starts, it’s time to focus on basketball.”
