The Dallas Wings waived the two players ahead of the roster finalization deadline on May 15.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings waived a top-15 draft pick and a Japanese guard ahead of the 2025 season.
The Wings announced they had waived rookie guard-forward Madison Scott and Japanese guard Mai Yamamoto on Sunday.
Dallas selected Scott with the 14th pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She came from Ole Miss, where she averaged 11.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 29.5 minutes per game.
The Wings signed Yamamoto to a training camp contract in February. In her professional career with the Toyota Antelopes, who the Wings played Saturday, she has averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game through 14 games.
Both players played around six minutes in each of the preseason contests so far. Scott went scoreless, and Yamamoto scored six points on two three-point attempts.
With the two players waived, the Wings’ roster is down to 13. Per WNBA rules, only 12 players are allowed on a team, meaning Dallas will waive one more player before the May 15 deadline.
In the league, rookies getting cut before the season starts is a common transaction. With an expanding talent pool in women’s basketball, fans and players have called for the WNBA to expand. That call has been answered as the league expanded from 12 to 13 teams this season with the addition of the Golden State Valkyries.
Next season, two more teams — the Toronto Tempo and Portland Thorns — will enter the mix.
