Daniel Cormier, former UFC double champion, is stepping in to support his long-time rival Jon Jones.
Jones recently pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault charges from March, where he allegedly threatened a UFC drug tester. Jones denies the allegations, stating the tester breached protocol.
Regardless of the outcome, this situation is not beneficial for Jones’ UFC image, as he has faced legal issues persistently over the past decade. The judge imposed pre-trial conditions on Jones, such as no firearms and restrictions on drug and alcohol use.
While opinions in the MMA community vary on Jones’ incident, Cormier, a former foe, is supporting him this time. Cormier expressed skepticism about the situation on his YouTube channel.
Cormier shared, “I always felt it was B.S. I don’t think much will come of it,” referring to Jones’ encounter with the drug tester. Cormier also acknowledged the added scrutiny on Jones due to his past actions.
Cormier believes the misdemeanor charge is a result of the spotlight on Jones, rather than the severity of the situation. He expressed doubt that significant consequences will arise from this incident.
Cormier addressed those hoping for Jones to face repercussions, stating, “I don’t think it will happen. A misdemeanor is the court’s way of addressing the issue.” Jones will have a bench trial in the next two months.
