On December 15, South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley spoke about the challenges of managing a talented roster.
“We consistently play 10 players, which can be difficult,” Staley explained, as reported by WACH reporter Jared Parker. She emphasized, “If someone is performing well, we tend to play them more, which means fewer minutes for others.
Staley stressed the importance of communicating this to her players, highlighting the healthy competition within the team. She clarified, “It’s not a reflection of their efforts, but rather the competitiveness of our opponents.”
While Staley believes in the talent of her roster, she doesn’t believe any of her players are WNBA-ready, as she mentioned in a recent statement.
She acknowledged the potential of her players to start elsewhere but emphasized the bigger picture of preparing them for professional careers. Staley reiterated, “No one on our team is ready to start in the WNBA.”
She emphasized the importance of playing a specific role and developing skills that align with a future in the league.
Staley’s perspective raises valid points, although opinions among her players may vary.
