Cary, NC – Day two is officially in the books from the ITA Women’s All-American Championships as the main draw singles round of 32 and doubles round of 16 have come to a close in North Carolina.
After numerous upsets on the first day of play, the trend continued for several of our top-seeded singles players on Thursday as the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 overall seeds fell in a highly competitive day of play.
The defending ITA All-American Champion and ITA National Player of the Year, Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M) [1], was taken down by Maria Sholokhova (Wisconsin) in a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory. Theadora Rabman (North Carolina) took down second-seeded Dasha Vidmanova (Georgia) in an impressive 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win. Taking down the three seed today was Tennessee’s Elza Tomase who got the better of in-state rival Celia-Belle Mohr (Vanderbilt) winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 to advance to the round of sixteen.
Seeded players who moved on to the round of sixteen include Connie Ma (Stanford) [4], Oby Ange Kajuru (Oklahoma State) [5], Savannah Broadus (Pepperdine) [6], Sarah Hamner (South Carolina) [8], and Julia Fliegner (Michigan) [10].
In doubles, the field has now shrunk from 16 teams to eight as the NCAA Individual Championship Qualifiers will be determined tomorrow. With only one seeded team remaining in the draw, the field is nearly as wide open as possible, with several teams showcasing their talent as a pairing early on in the season.
Defending NCAA National Champions, Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert (Georgia), fell on day number two of main draw play. The Cal pairing of Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika came away with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. The only remaining seeded team who will be joining them in the quarterfinals will be Oyinlomo Quadre and Katerina Mandelikova (FIU) [5] who won 6-2, 6-4 this evening.
Play from Cary begins at 10 am (EST) with singles to hit the court first in the morning. For those interested in learning more about the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, please visit the Women’s All-American event page or follow the ITA on social media (@ITA_Tennis).
