Canadians have started submitting their ideas for names for Toronto’s new WNBA team following a callout for brand ideas today.
“From the moment this franchise was announced, we’ve promised that this will be Canada’s team. That commitment starts today, by inviting every Canadian into the process of shaping our new name and logo,” WNBA Toronto Team President Teresa Resch said in a press release.
The organization is seeking more than just name ideas, but also suggestions for colors, personal stories, sounds, and images that represent what the team could symbolize.
Essentially, the team is relying on Canadians to define its WNBA identity. Fans who wish to share their input can visit the NameYourTeam.ca website or text WNBA to 1-833-662-3664 until Aug. 28.
A team of designers and advisors will evaluate all submissions, compile a list of options that will undergo a thorough legal review, including a trademark search before making a final selection. The chosen name will be decided by the team and league leadership and will be revealed to Canadians through the team’s blog and social media.
Canadians anticipate the final name to be revealed by the end of the year.
“Our goal is to create the most inclusive and participatory process in sports history because we understand that we’re not only creating a brand. We’re constructing a community,” Resch stated.
In May, Toronto was granted a WNBA team, becoming the first franchise outside the U.S.
Owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, the team will play at Coca Cola Coliseum and occasionally at Scotiabank Arena.
The team is scheduled to join the league in May 2026 as the 14th WNBA franchise, following the Golden State Valkyries, who are set to debut in 2025.
Some individuals online have already begun suggesting names.
“Toronto Crown is my choice,” one user said.
“Out of all the names I’ve heard, I still prefer the Toronto Sirens,” another user remarked.
“Toronto sweetergyals,” another user commented.
“Toronto North Stars,” another comment read.
