The Indiana Fever have bolstered their roster with the addition of two-time WNBA Champion DeWanna Bonner, the team announced today. Bonner, who ranks fourth all-time in WNBA scoring, arrives in Indianapolis after spending five seasons with the Connecticut Sun, including the 2023 and 2024 campaigns under Fever Head Coach Stephanie White.
Bonner’s Historic Career and Leadership
Amber Cox, COO and General Manager of the Fever, expressed excitement about the signing, emphasizing Bonner’s status as one of the league’s greatest players. “DeWanna is one of the greatest players in the history of our league,” said Cox. “She is a multi-dimensional scorer, can play every position on the floor, and shines brightest in the biggest moments. DB’s longevity and success in the WNBA have everything to do with the work she puts in, as well as her competitive drive. She is an incredible teammate and leader, and we are so excited to welcome her to the Fever.”
Bonner, in turn, shared her enthusiasm for joining the Fever, citing the team’s growth and commitment to women’s basketball. “I’m extremely thankful to be joining an organization that’s on the rise and committed to growing the sport of women’s basketball,” Bonner said. “I’m looking forward to coming in, sharing my leadership and knowledge, and doing my part to help get this team back to its championship pedigree. But, more importantly, I’m excited to get to know everyone at the organization – the front office, teammates, behind-the-scenes employees, and, of course, the fans! I can’t wait to see everyone at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in May.”
Career Achievements and Milestones
Bonner, 37, boasts an impressive career. With 7,482 career points, she ranks third among active players and fourth overall in WNBA history. She is just six points away from tying Hall of Famer Tina Thompson for third place in the league’s all-time scoring leaderboard. Bonner also ranks second among active players in career rebounds (3,067), steals (603), and three-pointers made (2,052).
The Fairfield, Alabama native was drafted No. 5 overall in 2009 by the Phoenix Mercury. In her rookie season, she helped the Mercury capture the WNBA championship—her first of two titles with the team, also winning again in 2014. In recognition of her exceptional performance, Bonner was named the WNBA’s Sixth Player of the Year in 2009, and she won the award again in 2010 and 2011.
WNBA All-Star and Continued Excellence
Bonner is a six-time WNBA All-Star, having been selected in 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024. She was also named to the 2015 All-WNBA First Team, the 2020 All-WNBA Second Team, and the 2015 WNBA All-Defensive Second Team. Her consistent performance continued in 2024, when she averaged 15.0 points per game, shooting 41.5% from the field, while also recording 6.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.
In 2024, Bonner joined Tamika Catchings as just the second player in WNBA history to surpass 7,000 career points, 3,000 career rebounds, and 1,000 career assists.
Playoff Success and Consistent Contributions
Bonner has played in the postseason 14 times throughout her career, missing the playoffs only once. Over the last five seasons with the Connecticut Sun, she helped the team reach or advance beyond the semifinal round each year, cementing her reputation as a reliable and impactful player in high-pressure situations.
As Bonner prepares for her next chapter with the Indiana Fever, her leadership, experience, and on-court ability will undoubtedly help elevate the team’s championship aspirations.
