According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks have fired pitching coach Brent Strom, bullpen coach Mike Fetters, and assistant pitching coach Dan Carlson. Arizona Sports 98.7’s John Gambadoro adds that there are no other coaching changes expected and speculates that the new pitching coach could be hired from outside the organization.
In 2025, changes will be made to the Diamondbacks coaching staff. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that Strom, Fetters, and Carlson will not return to their current roles. It is uncertain if they will be reassigned within the organization or if they will be moving on entirely.
Strom, who is 75 years old, will conclude his three-season stint as Arizona’s pitching coach. After hinting at retirement following the Astros’ 2021 World Series win, he announced that he would not return for a ninth season in Houston. Despite his previous comments, Strom was hired by the Diamondbacks less than two weeks later due to his residence in the Tucson area and the appeal of working with a new organization near his home.
The future of Strom’s coaching career remains unclear, as he has spent four decades as a major league coach or a minor league pitching instructor. Fetters, on the other hand, has been part of the D-backs organization for over a decade and has served as the bullpen coach for the past six seasons. The 59-year-old former big league reliever has only coached for the Diamondbacks.
As for Carlson, who is 54 years old, he has been the team’s assistant pitching coach for three years and previously worked as a minor league pitching coach and pitching coordinator within the organization.
