Diana Taurasi has not definitively stated whether this year will be her last in the WNBA, but this final chapter for the league’s all-time leading scorer took an interesting turn recently when Dan Le Batard announced that his company Meadowlark Media had been documenting Taurasi throughout 2024.
During a discussion about Taurasi’s potentially final WNBA game, a road defeat in Game 2 of a first-round series against the Minnesota Lynx, Le Batard paid tribute to Taurasi’s illustrious career and provided an update on the ongoing production of a documentary on her.
“Meadowlark Media has been following her around all season and working on a documentary about her,” Le Batard revealed on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz. “And we’re going to delve into the origins of that kind of greatness.”
A Taurasi documentary from Meadowlark, in collaboration with Skydance Sports, was initially announced in early 2022.
This season, Taurasi secured a record sixth gold medal and averaged 15 points per game while appearing in 36 of 40 regular season games in the WNBA. Despite it being the final year of her contract with the Phoenix Mercury, Taurasi has not officially disclosed her future plans.
The team launched a social media campaign titled “If This Is It” ahead of the last two home games of the season and prepared a tribute video for after the final game.
Taurasi made a postgame speech but did not reveal her future intentions, stating that she would make a final decision after Phoenix was eliminated from the playoffs.
Now that time has arrived. While the documentary was announced years ago, the start of production in 2024 does not necessarily confirm her retirement. However, it would not be surprising if Meadowlark closely followed Taurasi this year, as they may have had an inkling that this could be her final season.
