The Phoenix Mercury will be unveiling two new practice courts dedicated to franchise icon Diana Taurasi ahead of the 2024 WNBA All-Star weekend, as reported by ESPN’s Michael Voepel.
These practice courts will be a part of the team’s state-of-the-art $70 million practice facility, with the official opening scheduled for “next week.” The courts will bear Taurasi’s name and will feature logos inspired by her legacy.
At 42 years old, Taurasi is currently in her 20th season with the Mercury and recently earned her 11th All-Star selection. As the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer and ranked 5th in all-time assists, she continues to dominate the league.
With three championships under her belt since being the first overall pick in the 2004 draft, Taurasi is now aiming for her sixth Olympic gold medal at the upcoming Paris Games with Team USA.
Matt Ishbia, owner of both the Mercury and the Phoenix Suns, expressed his excitement in honoring Taurasi during the WNBA All-Star Game taking place in Phoenix.
“It’s a perfect fit to have the WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix and to honor what I believe is the greatest of all time,” Ishbia shared, as quoted by Voepel. “Diana is not only a phenomenal player but also an exceptional individual. Having her name on the court will ensure that her legacy lives on for years to come.”
While Taurasi continues to make history and add to her impressive list of achievements, she will always be remembered as a significant figure within the Mercury organization, with her legacy enshrined in the team’s facilities long after her playing days have ended.
