Diana Taurasi is happy with the growth of the WNBA and is ready to see players like A’ja Wilson, Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark take it to the next level. In an interview with On3 earlier this year, Taurasi shared her thoughts on the future of the WNBA as it continues to see steady growth.

“I think the trajectory of the league is amazing right now,” Taurasi told On3. “It’s going to where we always thought it could go. Just amazing talent. And to me, we have to make sure the game stays on point. That, to me, is always the most important thing. I always knew we had the best players in the world, and now for them to be able to showcase that on the biggest stage is just it’s music to our ears.”

Diana Taurasi retired from the WNBA after the 2024 season, and it was a historic year for the league. When the 2024 season ended, the WNBA announced that it attracted an all-time record of more than 54 million unique viewers across ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2 ION and NBA.TV. The league also announced it had its highest total attendance in 22 years (2,353,735), up 48 percent from 2023.

Diana Taurasi is a big reason for the WNBA’s growth

Some would say the reason for the growth of the league is the young stars, specifically Clark, who won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2024. Clark is currently dealing with an injury, but she is one of the more exciting players in the WNBA when she’s healthy.

Taurasi was also an exciting player during her 20 seasons in the WNBA. She was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the 2024 WNBA draft and spent her entire career with the team. In her career, Taurasi was named an All-Star 11 times, selected to the All-WNBA Team 14 times, named WNBA MVP in 2009 and helped the Mercury win three WNBA titles (2007, 2009 and 2014).

But that’s not all Taurasi accomplished in their WNBA career. The former UConn star led the league in scoring five times and won the assists title in 2014. And based on what she did on the court, Taurasi is a member of the WNBA’s 15th, 20th and 25th Anniversary Teams.
