Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark set a new record in the WNBA on Friday, breaking the all-time record for assists in a single season as she wraps up her rookie year.
Clark achieved her 317th assist during a game against the Las Vegas Aces, surpassing Alyssa Thomas’s previous record set in 2023.
Even without the record-breaking assist, Clark had an impressive performance, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in a close 78-74 loss to the Aces.
The young standout in women’s basketball, drafted as the No. 1 pick in April, has been setting records throughout the season following a successful college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Recently, she also broke the WNBA record for most 3-pointers made in a rookie season.
With 19 wins this season, the Fever secured a spot in the WNBA playoffs, marking their first postseason appearance since 2016.
Clark has been inadvertently drawn into cultural controversies since joining the league. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert tried to create a rivalry between Clark and Chicago Sky guard Angel Reese based on their races, causing backlash from the players’ union.
Clark and Reese are both seen as top contenders for the Rookie of the Year award at the end of the season.
