Reports suggest that one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ sought-after trade targets, All-Star closer Devin Williams, may not be on the market this offseason after all.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Milwaukee Brewers intend to retain Williams until at least the All-Star break before considering a potential trade at the deadline. Despite initial speculation at the general manager meetings in early November, president of baseball operations Matt Arnold has hinted at the possibility of exploring trades involving Williams, stating, “Certainly we have to be open to those types of things, but I think he makes our team better. We have to be open to those types of moves; if we think something good presents itself, we’ll always have to listen.”
Recently, a proposed trade between the Dodgers and Brewers involving Williams, infielder Gavin Lux, and pitching prospects Peter Heubeck and Payton Martin was suggested by Noah Camras of Dodgers Nation. With Mookie Betts set to return to the infield in 2025, Lux, Miguel Rojas, and Tommy Edman are expected to compete for the remaining infield spot. On the other hand, the departure of free agent shortstop Willy Adames from the Brewers opens up an infield position, potentially giving Lux a better chance at securing a starting role in 2025.
Furthermore, Williams, a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, would bring strength to the Dodgers bullpen, which played a significant role in the team’s recent World Series victory.
Williams has been a standout in the Brewers bullpen, recording impressive stats with a low ERA and consistent performance over multiple seasons. Milwaukee declined his club option but retains control over the 30-year-old right-hander for one more year.
Despite Williams potentially being off the trade market this offseason, the Dodgers will likely monitor his situation closely in the first half of the season. His addition to the bullpen could prove crucial as the Dodgers aim for back-to-back World Series titles.
While the Brewers may be reluctant to part with Williams, the right deal could still prompt a potential trade.
