The Dodgers have announced that Cavan Biggio has been designated for assignment in order to make room for Freddie Freeman, who has been activated from the family emergency list on Monday.
Biggio, aged 29, had been serving as the Dodgers’ main first baseman while Freeman took time away from the team to be with his family. Freeman’s son, Maximus, was admitted to the hospital on July 26, during the Dodgers’ visit to the Astros in Houston, Texas.
Although Freeman was absent for 10 days, he is now back in the lineup for Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Biggio played in 30 games after being traded from the Toronto Blue Jays on June 12. He had a batting average of .192, on-base percentage of .306, and slugging percentage of .329 while also playing in four different positions.
Cavan Biggio, the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, had spent his entire professional career with the Toronto organization before the trade. He was drafted in the fifth round from the University of Notre Dame in the 2016 draft.

If the Dodgers had not released Biggio on Monday, it seemed likely to happen soon. Along with Freeman, the Dodgers are preparing to welcome back Miguel Rojas from the injured list in the near future.
Additionally, infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman is expected to return from the injured list in August. Players like Mookie Betts and Max Muncy could also make their returns in the coming weeks.
In light of these developments, Biggio is just the first in a series of moves that will likely reshape the Dodgers’ active roster this month.
Biggio hit three home runs and had 10 RBIs as a Dodger, following his two homers and nine RBIs in 44 games with Toronto before being designated for assignment.
In 2019, Biggio received votes for Rookie of the Year after hitting 16 homers and collecting 48 RBIs while playing as the primary second baseman for a young Blue Jays team.
