Clayton Kershaw started the four-game series at Chase Field for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. With Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto already sidelined, the veteran left-hander had to leave the game in the second inning after giving up a solo home run to Corbin Caroll.
Kershaw’s early exit was due to a bone spur on his big left toe. Despite this setback, the game continued to unfold in a dramatic fashion.
The Dodgers turned to their bullpen for the remaining eight innings of the game. While there were some tense moments, the bullpen stepped up.
Reliever Alex Vesia reflected on the game, saying, “We battled. That’s all you can do.”
The bullpen managed to pitch five scoreless innings, showcasing their resilience even when they weren’t expected to play. They held on for a crucial win on Friday night.
Friday night also saw history being made.
Shohei Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to achieve 43 home runs and 43 stolen bases in a single season. Despite Ohtani’s remarkable feat, the focus shifted to the Dodgers’ collective effort to secure a lead amidst pitching challenges.
Will Smith’s three-run homer extended the Dodgers’ lead over the Diamondbacks to 9-5 in the seventh inning. Freddie Freeman also made an impact with a homer in his first at-bat for the Dodgers after recovering from a fractured finger.
Third baseman Max Muncy described the win as one of the biggest considering the circumstances.
The Dodgers’ strong offensive response bodes well for their postseason aspirations.
Following their 10-9 victory over Arizona, the Dodgers now hold an 81-54 record and a five-game lead in the National League West. The rivalry series continues on Saturday night with rookie Gavin Stone taking the mound for the Dodgers. Fans are hoping for a less intense game in the second matchup of the series.
