The Los Angeles Dodgers are excited to have starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto back in the starting rotation.
Manager Dave Roberts announced to reporters on Wednesday that the Japanese right-hander will start on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium.
“It’s been a challenging journey, but coming back here is very rewarding,” Yamamoto expressed through his interpreter in Oklahoma City. “Watching my team play has made me eager to return as soon as possible. I’m looking forward to playing alongside so many great players once again.”
Yamamoto completed his second rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Originally scheduled to pitch three innings, a 17-pitch battle with Sugar Land catcher Omar Narváez pushed his pitch count to 53 after two innings, concluding his outing.
“Early in the game, I was throwing strikes, but didn’t get as many swings and misses as I wanted, and some pitches were called balls,” Yamamoto reflected. “Towards the end, I was able to pinpoint the issues, which is encouraging.”
In the first inning, Yamamoto gave up two runs after a walk and a double, but also managed to strike out three batters. His fastball maintained an average of 95.4 mph, consistent with his season numbers, and he generated eight swinging strikes.
While not completely satisfied with his performance, the rookie remained positive about his progress.
“I didn’t have my best stuff today, but it was still a productive outing,” he acknowledged.
The Dodgers have been missing Yamamoto since he was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 16 due to a rotator cuff strain. After almost a month without throwing, he started playing catch in mid-July and has been steadily progressing since then.
Yamamoto’s return to the Dodgers is crucial as they make postseason roster decisions. However, he is dedicated to giving his all for the team, aiming to win and perform at his best.
“I’m fully committed to working hard and getting back to where I need to be,” Yamamoto affirmed.
