Bobby Miller made his return on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals, but it may have been too soon. When the Los Angeles Dodgers sent him to Triple-A Oklahoma City in July, the goal was for Miller to work on his performance. However, with Tyler Glasnow landing on the injured list on Friday, Miller was called back up.
Unfortunately, Miller’s return showed the same struggles as his previous outings in June and July. He struggled with command and saw a drop in velocity after the first inning. In the end, he gave up four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings, leading to a 5-2 loss for the Dodgers against the Cardinals.
Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged that Miller’s return was mostly due to circumstances, despite his underwhelming performance in Triple-A. Miller, who had a standout rookie season last year, has not lived up to expectations in 2024.
During the game, Miller’s fastball started strong but lost speed as the innings progressed. Despite only allowing one walk, he threw four wild pitches. Both home runs he gave up were on fastballs while behind in the count.
Miller reflected on his performance, noting that falling behind in the count was his main issue. He emphasized the importance of getting ahead in the count to improve his pitching.
Looking ahead, Roberts hopes to see improvement in Miller’s next start while Glasnow is on the IL. However, Miller will need to show progress in his pitching to secure his spot in the rotation.
