Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s performance in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres did not meet the Los Angeles Dodgers’ expectations. It was a tough start that highlighted some concerns about the Dodgers’ postseason struggles.
In the early innings of the game, Yamamoto struggled as the Padres took advantage. After three innings, Yamamoto had given up five earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout. Manager Dave Roberts made the decision to replace him with Ryan Brasier to start the fourth inning.
The Padres took an early lead, with Luis Arraez leading off the game with a hit to left field. Yamamoto then walked Fernando Tatis Jr., setting up a scoring opportunity for the Padres. Despite showing more confidence as the game progressed, Yamamoto gave up a two-run homer to Manny Machado, extending the Padres’ lead to 3-0.
Despite a rocky start, Yamamoto showed improvement in the later innings. Shohei Ohtani’s game-tying home run in the second inning helped reset the game at 3-3, giving Yamamoto a chance to regroup.
Yamamoto faced challenges in the third inning, ultimately giving up a two-run double to Xander Bogaerts. With Brasier warming up in the bullpen, it was clear that Yamamoto’s night would soon be over.
While Yamamoto’s outing raised concerns about the Dodgers’ decision to start him in Game 1, the focus now shifts to Game 2 with Jack Flaherty taking the mound. The Dodgers will rely on their bullpen and offense to bounce back in the rest of the series.
