Dustin Poirier believes there was an opportunity for Conor McGregor to almost guarantee victory in his comeback fight.
McGregor has been teasing a return to the Octagon, but ever since breaking his leg in a trilogy bout with “The Diamond” back in 2021, he hasn’t seen action. The “Notorious” one was scheduled to meet Michael Chandler at UFC 303 back in 2024, but he suffered an injury.
Appearing on the “JRE MMA Podcast,” Poirier shared his belief that the perfect comeback fight for McGregor was on the table (via MMAFighting).
“I thought the Chandler fight was a layup for him,” Poirier said. “A great matchup for him. [Chandler is] up there, 38 or 39 [years old]. But it’s just a layup for Conor.
“Chandler’s hittable, covers distance not that technically. Huge movements. You jump in, you get carried out. Conor’s a sniper. I just think that’s a great matchup for him.”
Poirier also reflected on Chandler getting burned for ultimately waiting on McGregor without even getting the fight.
“You get paid,” Poirier said. “And he sat out for two years waiting on Conor.”
UFC CEO Dana White has told reporters that the ship has sailed on McGregor vs. Chandler. What this could mean for “Mystic Mac’s” opponent remains to be seen. While McGregor won’t be returning on the UFC Freedom 250 card, speculation is that he could be back for International Fight Week.
McGregor’s next fight still hasn’t been made official. Names such as Carlos Prates and Mauricio Ruffy expressed interest in the fight. Instead, Prates will meet former UFC Welterweight Champion Jack Della Maddalena on May 2. Meanwhile, Ruffy will be facing Chandler at the aforementioned Freedom 250 event.
