Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …
Ranking all 32 NFL teams’ coaching staffs, coordinators in 2024 – ESPN+15. Philadelphia Eagles. I have no idea how to rank the Eagles. I shouldn’t even be expected to write a blurb about the Eagles. I should just gesticulate wildly at the numerous and detailed reports of coaching dysfunction last season, shrug my shoulders and keep it moving. I don’t know how to credit Sirianni. He’s the best fourth-down decision-maker in the league by the numbers, but so much of that success is a credit to the tush push, not any particular genius from the head coach. The complete collapse of the Eagles’ offense from the Shane Steichen era to the Brian Johnson experiment indicates to me that Sirianni was not much of a schematic influence on the successful Jalen Hurts offense of 2022. And as a leader, motivator and manager of personalities, the reports from last season are extremely rough. I don’t think Sirianni is completely a stuffed shirt, but figuring out his role alongside these two excellent coordinators is tricky. Fangio had a tough time with the Dolphins’ locker room last season, but he was a key voice in the success of the 2022 Eagles defense and remains one of the shrewdest defensive coaches in the league. Some of the shine is off Moore, who interviewed for the Eagles’ head-coaching job back in 2021 at the height of his hype. Moore still runs a dangerous, complex offense that presents a lot of stressors for opposing defenses. Is it a great fit for Jalen Hurts’ play style? I’m not convinced, but it’s still a good system, and Hurts’ mobility creates the opportunity for a lot of fresh wrinkles. I have the Eagles 15th because I’d love to have Fangio calling my defense and Moore calling my offense. A wide range of outcomes is conceivable from this group this season, though. Buckle up!
Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Jalen Hurts threw an interception so the season is officially over – BGNWell, as you can see from the headline, Hurts finally threw an interception. Thus, the season is officially over. There’s just no coming back from this. The Eagles are going 0-17. The pick took place when Hurts got the ball out a little late and his pass over the middle wound up in the hands of Darius Slay instead of intended target Parris Campbell. After practice, Slay told reporters he baited Hurts into that throw. Slay said he didn’t say anything to Hurts since the quarterback can get annoyed after he makes a mistake like that. But Hurts said he had some words for Slay: “About time.” Slay had a chance for another interception when Hurts left a throw to a crossing A.J. Brown in the end zone short of the receiver. What should’ve reasonably been a touchdown connection instead resulted in a pass breakup. These two mistakes did not totally sink Hurts’ final practice, however. He rebounded with some really good throws to keep the offense driving down the field with regularity. Hurts’ flashiest completions included: 1) a downfield connection to DeVonta Smith in the end zone for the second day in a row and 2) a ball in a tight window to Kenny Gainwell in the back right corner of the end zone for another score. Overall, the positive outweighed a couple of bad reps. Hence, we’re giving Hurts a thumbs up for his final training camp practice this summer. As you can see below, there’s reason to be encouraged about Hurts’ outlook this season. He had a good camp.
How Will Every NFL Defense Perform in 2024? – The Ringer14. Philadelphia Eagles. Has there been a bigger coaching upgrade in the history of the NFL than going from defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio? The Eagles made an in-season change last year, going from Sean Desai to Patricia, and the defense completely fell apart, finishing the year 29th in efficiency. You could watch football for another 100 years and not see a more confused group of players. In addition to being poorly coached, the Eagles defense was also unlucky last season. It had the fourth-worst injury luck of any defense. In the offseason, the Eagles traded edge defender Haason Reddick and replaced him with free agent Bryce Huff. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who was one of their most consistent players last season, retired. The never-ending rotating door at linebacker now includes Devin White and Zack Baun. And the Eagles completely remade their secondary, using top-40 picks on defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean while also signing safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
2024 NFL Preseason, Week 3: One thing to watch for on each of the 32 teams – NFL.comEAGLES: Health does not favor the Eagles right now, as they find themselves pretty thin in a few spots heading into Saturday’s preseason finale against the Vikings. Cooper DeJean’s injury-interrupted camp has put them in a position where they might not be able to fully rely on him in the slot role early, exposing a lack of depth when it comes to slot-capable DBs. The offensive line, long a bedrock group, is a bit nicked up, and the second-team unit hasn’t looked quite as sturdy as one might hope. Those are the two positions I’m most locked in on for this final preseason game, to see how the Eagles handle the snaps there. If first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell really is set to start outside and move into the slot — and coordinator Vic Fangio believes those are two vastly different roles — then it will be asking a lot of the rookie. Will the Eagles give him some extra reps against the Vikings as a brush-up?
‘Dudes were just killing each other:’ How Vic Fangio is using vintage NFL film to transform Eagles’ defense – NBCSPVic Fangio loves showing his defensive guys videos of old-time football stars playing the game the right way. And maybe the wrong way, too. When you hear people talk about how Fangio is “old school,” it’s really true. Fangio coached Sam Mills and Pat Swilling with the Saints, NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis with the 49ers, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis with the Ravens. Those are all guys who played a certain brand of football, a brand that Fangio wants the 2024 Eagles to play. That means going hard to whistle. And then maybe a little longer. “Man, how they was hitting, I love that,” Nolan Smith said after practice Wednesday, his eyes bulging as he discussed the vintage videos Fangio likes to show his players.
AJ Dillon waiting on test results about latest stinger – PFTPackers running back AJ Dillon missed the final three games of last season with a stinger. He has another one now. Dillon said he was diagnosed with the stinger during the joint practice against the Broncos on Friday. He is awaiting test results, uncertain how severe it is or when doctors will clear him to return. [BLG Note: Something to monitor ahead of Week 1.]
Steelers place Nate Herbig on IR, make additional roster moves – Behind The Steel CurtainThe Steelers shuffled their offseason roster some more on Tuesday. The team announced they have placed center Nate Herbig on injured reserve, released cornerback Anthony Averett, and signed defensive end Marcus Haynes and linebacker Kyahva Tezino. It’s a tough break for Herbig, who entered the preseason as the Steelers’ starting center. The veteran reportedly tore his rotator cuff, prematurely ending his season. Rookie center Zach Frazier will take the starting job in his stead.
Report: Dallas Cowboys signing defensive tackle Linval Joseph – Blogging The BoysThe Dallas Cowboys have been far more active in roster acquisition while at training camp in Oxnard than they were for the entire offseason leading up to it. This is how they like to do business. Last week Dallas traded for defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and signed pass rusher Carl Lawson. Adding more bodies to the rotation along the line is never a bad thing and the Cowboys have been vocal about wanting some more depth since seeing what they have to work with while at camp. Notably the Cowboys have explicitly expressed a desire to add another body along the interior. Wednesday evening we got the news that they had signed Linval Joseph. [BLG Note: Joseph turns 36 in October.]
Why Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe are excelling in new positions on Cowboys OL – SB NationSay all you want about Jerry Jones’ inability to keep the talent he has – and we’ve all done more than enough of that in the cases of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons – but we have to give a proverbial tip of the 10-gallon hat to Dallas’ personnel people, led by rockstar VP of Player Personnel Will McClay, for their ability to identify and maximize prospect talent in the draft. Lamb and Parsons were each first-round picks in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and it wasn’t tough to see that each of them had what it took to be among the best players at their positions. But McClay and his crew have also stolen future stars like Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Osa Odighizuwa outside of the first round. The 2024 Cowboys draft seems to have representatives from each of the two groups – the obvious first-round talent in Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton, and the more hidden future star in Kansas State offensive lineman Cooper Beebe.
Roster news: Giants release TE Tyree Jackson with an injury settlement – Big Blue ViewThe New York Giants have released TE Tyree Jackson (back) from the IR with an injury settlement, as first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. The Giants originally signed Jackson to their practice squad on August 30th of 2023, one day after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles. Jackson came into the NFL when he was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted quarterback out of Buffalo. He transitioned to the tight end position for the Eagles, and played at that position for the Giants as well.
Film Session: Jayden Daniels was in sync with Terry McLaurin and Dyami Brown – Hogs HavenAssuming that Jayden Daniels’s preseason is over, he’d be entering the regular season with two efficient outings against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, respectively. In two drives against the Dolphins, Daniels played in an uptempo, no-huddle offense that highlighted his mental processing and accuracy. In this film session, I highlighted the chemistry Daniels has begun developing with Dyami Brown and Terry McLaurin. I also looked at several other standouts from Saturday’s matchup against the Dolphins, including Brian Robinson, Luke McCaffrey, and Tyler Owens.
