Eminem is throwing his support behind Detroit sports once again — this time, by joining a high-powered bid to bring a professional women’s basketball team back to the city.
According to Sportico, Marshall is part of a group led by Pistons owner Tom Gores, which includes some of the city’s biggest names in sports and business. The bid also features owners of other Detroit sports teams, the Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions, along with notable figures like Grant Hill, Jared Goff, and General Motors CEO Mary Barra.
The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is the premier professional basketball league for women in the US, known for its high level of competition and growing influence in the sports world. As women’s basketball continues to gain more attention and investment, WNBA expansion is seen as a major step in growing the game and providing more opportunities for female athletes.
Detroit was home to the WNBA’s Detroit Shock from 1998 to 2009, and now the city is looking to rejoin the league. Originally, the WNBA planned to add just one expansion team, but with strong demand, that number may go up to three. New franchises in San Francisco, Portland, and Toronto are already confirmed, and Detroit is one of several cities competing for the next spot.
If successful, the new team would play at Little Caesars Arena, home to the Pistons and Red Wings. While details about the bid’s financials remain private, expansion fees for new teams are expected to be well into nine figures.
Eminem has always been vocal about his love for Detroit’s sports teams, from the Pistons to the Lions, making his involvement in this bid no surprise. With a powerful team of backers and growing support for WNBA expansion, the Motor City might see the return of women’s pro basketball.
