The Jets possess a talented roster with playmakers like Aaron Rodgers and the newly acquired Davante Adams, but the key to success lies in having a cohesive team rather than just a collection of individual players.
This sentiment was emphasized by Damien Woody and Rex Ryan on ESPN’s “Get Up” as they critiqued the Jets’ performance, highlighting their recent struggles, including a fourth consecutive loss to the Steelers and the quick firing of head coach Robert Saleh.
“There’s a distinction between a roster and a team. The Jets have a roster, but they lack a team mentality. Despite having well-known players, the team is not meeting the required standards and lacks a cohesive identity,” remarked Woody, a former Jet from 2008-10.
Despite bringing in new players like Adams and Haason Reddick, the Jets are still struggling, leading Woody to question the lack of leadership within the team.
“The players in the locker room need to decide how they want their season to turn out. Excuses won’t cut it anymore. It’s time for someone to step up and take charge because right now, I see a roster, not a team,” he continued.
Ryan, who previously coached the Jets, echoed Woody’s sentiments and emphasized that the team’s sense of pride must start from the top.
“As a coach, it’s your responsibility to build a culture and a team. The name on the front of the jersey should matter more than the one on the back. Where is the pride in the New York Jets? It starts from the top, and we’re not seeing it,” Ryan stated.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, Ryan emphasized that creating a winning culture ultimately falls on him.
“Why hire a coach if not to establish a culture where the team comes first? Right now, that’s not the case,” Ryan remarked.
With a record of 2-5 and playoff hopes fading, Rodgers remains optimistic about the team’s potential to turn things around with the recent additions and a focus on teamwork.
“We have to figure things out. The new players can make a difference, but it’s up to us to believe in ourselves and start winning games. A winning streak starts with the first win,” said Rodgers, reflecting on the team’s upcoming challenges.
As they prepare to face the Patriots next, the Jets will need to come together as a team to secure their third win of the season.
