‘Every game is so important’ – Liverpool boss Taylor looks ahead to Leicester City clash

Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side haven’t put any extra emphasis on this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Leicester City.

The bottom two clubs go head-to-head in St Helens. Liverpool are just one point and one place above their latest opponents.

It’s a big game in the battle for survival but Liverpool boss Taylor says that his side are treating the fixture the same as any other.

“[It’s] no more than the importance of every game we play,” Taylor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “Every game is so important for us. You’ve seen that the WSL this season is really competitive; you’ve seen teams at the bottom take points from teams at the top. We’ve done it and we’ve run teams close as well.

“It’s a really ultra-competitive league and that means that every game is so important. We understand the importance of this game but it doesn’t change anything with the remaining five that we will have after that and the FA Cup game as well.

“For us, it’s attacking each game as it comes, recognising the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and trying to impose on that as much as we possibly can.”

Going on to discuss Leicester City, Taylor highlighted the fact that his side are coming up against a team that are hard to beat.

He said “When Rick [Passmoor] went into that role, he made them really difficult to beat, they’re very organised in the way that they set up. It’s very rare that they shift from that style of play and the way that they want to defend and look to hurt teams.

“They made some amendments in the January window, similar to us. At this moment in time, it hasn’t translated to results on the pitch but what you can guarantee is they’re a difficult opponent to beat.”

Liverpool are unbeaten at home in the current calendar year. Regardless of the recent good form, Taylor says that St Helens has always felt like home.

He said “I’ve always felt really comfortable at St Helens, even in the early part of the season. It’s a really good venue to play at. I understand the logistics for our supporters, it’s not in Liverpool, it’s in St Helens but I think our core supporters enjoy coming to that environment and getting behind the team.

“We certainly feel like it’s a home. It’s a very good pitch, very good stadium and the facilities for the girls are top. It just allows us to replicate what we have at Melwood which is really good facilities, a really good platform to play on.

“Of course, most teams want their home form to be the bedrock of their success and recently we have made it really difficult for teams coming to that environment. We want that to continue.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Leicester City kicks-off at 11.55am on Sunday. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
