The GIST: ICYMI, Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) is creating a buzz with its tech-infused 3-on-3 golf tournament founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The debut drew nearly 1M viewers last week, with LA Golf Club beating Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club in front of a star-studded crowd in the second installment.
After two weeks of virtual golf action, let’s tackle some burning questions about this innovative hole-in-one.
Why is it unique?: TGL stands out because it takes place indoors on the largest golf simulator in the world. The massive five-story screen provides a larger-than-life experience, closely replicating the outdoor golfing experience with the latest technology.
Another exciting aspect is the shift from individual to team play. TGL turns golf into a team sport, drawing inspiration from team events like the Solheim and Ryder Cups. Golf is just more fun with friends, especially when they’re mic’d up.
Who’s participating?: The league features twenty-four of the world’s top golfers divided into six high-profile teams. With players like McIlroy, Woods, Thomas, Fowler, and Homa, TGL showcases six of the top 10 golfers globally.
How does it operate?: In each two-hour event, two teams compete with three golfers from each team taking turns in a 3-on-3 format for nine holes. The second part consists of a six-hole one-on-one showdown between players. The intense competition adds to the drama.
What about the courses?: The league’s three course designers let their creativity run wild, creating 30 unique holes for the event. While some holes resemble real-world courses, others are purely imaginative. With a $21M prize, playing on an active volcano is just part of the excitement.
What’s its connection to the PGA?: All 24 TGL golfers also compete on the PGA Tour. The TGL operates in collaboration with the PGA, holding events on Mondays (and later on Tuesdays) to complement the Tour schedule. It’s a win-win situation for golf enthusiasts.
