The ownership of the WSL and the Championship will be transferred from the FA to a new entity, as confirmed in a statement by the governing body of football in England today.
The statement outlines that a new independent company, the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL), will now oversee the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship, marking a significant moment for the women’s game.
“For the first time in England, there is an independent and dedicated organization focused on advancing women’s football,” reads the statement.
The CEO of this new company will be Nikki Doucet, a former Nike and Citigroup executive, and each club within the leagues will be part shareholders in the company.
The two top tiers of women’s football in England were previously under the FA, with their transfer completed to kickstart a new era dedicated to growth and maximizing potential, with players and fans at its core.
Dawn Airey, the Chair of the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited Board of Directors, is excited to harness the full potential of women’s football with a unified vision and collaborative effort.
The WPLL have announced a cooperation and funding agreement with the Premier League to support the development of recruitment and other projects, further enhancing the women’s game with financial backing and expertise.
