In a recent conversation with an event operator, it was mentioned that the discrepancy between independent academy programs and state association teams is becoming more pronounced. This trend continues as programs recruit players from local clubs.
There are misconceptions about the strength of programs like those in the EYBL Scholastic League compared to parochial and public schools. Firstly, top public school teams have historically been able to compete with private and independent clubs since mainstream rankings began in the 1980s. Additionally, talented players are often recruited to various schools within their region, regardless of whether they are affiliated with a state association or a public school.
Considering this, we examine the top-ranked public school team for each season during the FAB 50 era (1987-88 to present). This analysis is limited to public schools as they are typically separated from private schools in state competitions. It is evident that the top public school teams are formidable contenders for a national title.
