Six-time Olympic gold medalist Diana Taurasi announced over the summer that she is finished playing for USA basketball. Could this also mean the end of her WNBA career?
Despite turning 42 in June, Taurasi continues to have a significant impact in her 20th year in the WNBA, averaging 13.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.8 rebounds since the Olympic break. The Mercury All-Star guard holds the title of the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer (for now) and is considered one of the greatest female basketball players in history. Her eventual retirement will open the door for the next generation of stars to shine in the league.
Taurasi’s career longevity and WNBA records are unmatched, but a recent social media post by the Phoenix Mercury has led some to believe that her retirement may be imminent.
The Mercury’s post promoting attendance at their final two regular season home games included a video montage of Taurasi’s career highlights with the caption, “If this is it.”
Fans immediately speculated about the implications of the post.
As the first overall pick by the Mercury in the 2004 WNBA draft, Taurasi achieved a historic milestone in August 2023 when she became the first player to score 10,000 career points. If this does end up being her final season, the three-time WNBA champion will aim to finish her career on a high note with the playoff-bound Mercury this autumn.
