While rivals Red Bull and Mercedes are often recognized for their strategy of placing young drivers at rival teams, Ferrari fans will have a particularly keen interest in watching three of their drivers closely during the 2025 Formula 1 campaign.

A large part of the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Lewis Hamilton as he embarks on his first season with Ferrari, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a championship pedigree. The Scuderia’s long-standing favorite, Charles Leclerc, is also a focal point as he enters his seventh season with the team, determined to maintain his position as the lead driver and once again outperform his new teammate.

In addition to their prominent pairing, Ferrari’s influence within the paddock continues to be felt as they have once again placed a rising star with one of their direct competitors for the upcoming season. Oliver Bearman, a promising young talent, made his mark in 2024 by stepping in for Carlos Sainz at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as well as for Kevin Magnussen at both the Baku and Sao Paulo races for Haas.

His performances across these three Grand Prix weekends, coupled with his impressive showings during FP1 sessions with Haas, particularly his work with Ayao Komatsu, secured him a permanent seat for 2025. While Ollie Bearman isn’t the only rookie set for their first full season in Formula 1, having already gained experience in those key races gives him an edge over other drivers, such as Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, and former Formula 2 teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Nate Saunders, speaking on the Unlapped Podcast, highlighted that Ferrari staff have already been “really impressed” with the British teenager, making him one to watch closely in the upcoming season.

Explaining the Ferrari junior’s rise to Formula 1, Saunders mentioned that he is another very likable driver, contrasting with Antonelli, who was signed by Ferrari at a younger age and moved from England to Italy. He recalled speaking to the British driver at Imola during his first few practice sessions with Haas, by which point he had already made his Ferrari debut.

Saunders noted that Oliver Bearman’s debut had come about at the last minute due to Carlos Sainz’s appendicitis. He remembered thinking how challenging it must have been for Bearman to make his debut not only at the last minute but also for Ferrari at a street circuit, which is one of the toughest challenges in F1.

Though Oliver Bearman finished lower than Carlos Sainz would have expected to, Saunders emphasized that it was a respectable performance. The key takeaway from that race was that the Ferrari junior had done exactly what he needed to do: he completed a clean race, avoided crashing, and showed speed.

He then pointed out that those who had spoken to him about Bearman, both at Ferrari and Haas, were consistently impressed with his maturity, his communication with the team, and his feedback. Nate Saunders concluded by remarking that Oliver Bearman is yet another exciting young driver entering F1.

Oliver Bearman’s entry into Formula 1 with Haas has drawn comparisons to the early career trajectory of several drivers, and in particular, Ferrari’s long-term plans for him appear to be closely aligned with the team’s history of nurturing talent.

Much like Charles Leclerc, who was loaned to Sauber for his rookie F1 season before being swiftly recalled to Ferrari after impressing with his potential, Bearman’s situation at Haas may offer a similar path, although it is unlikely that he will spend just one season with the team. Ollie Bearman can look to Leclerc’s swift rise as motivation, knowing that impressive performances with a smaller team could ultimately lead to an opportunity with Ferrari.

Another driver whose career could serve as a source of inspiration for Ollie Bearman is George Russell. Russell spent three seasons at Williams on loan from Mercedes, and while Mercedes boss Toto Wolff acknowledged that Russell may have stayed away from the top team for longer than ideal, his eventual success with Mercedes proves that a stint at a lower-ranking team doesn’t preclude a move to the front of the grid.

If the British driver can replicate Russell’s success and show the necessary pace and maturity, he might eventually secure a seat with Ferrari. Should the Scuderia decide to recall him, he would likely be a natural replacement for Lewis Hamilton, especially considering Hamilton’s age. Although the 40-year-old is unlikely to step away from Ferrari if the team is competitive, the realities of time mean that, eventually, even the most successful drivers must make way for new talent. The Ferrari junior could be the next in line to take on that role.
