Mitchell joins Caitlin Clark as the only Indiana player to be named to an All-WNBA team since it was instituted in 2016.
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell was named to the AP’s All-WNBA First Team Friday.
It’s the first time the Cincinnati native has earned the honor and Mitchell is just the second Fever player to be named to an AP All-WNBA team since it started in 2016. Teammate Caitlin Clark was named to the first team last year. Mitchell was named to the AP’s All-Rookie team in 2018.
Mitchell started all 44 games for the Fever, making 111 3-pointers, the most among WNBA players this season, and her 20.2 points per game broke a team record set by Tamika Catchings in 2003.Â
Mitchell was named to the WNBA All-Star team for the third consecutive season, scoring 20 points in the game played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Mitchell reflected on the honor Friday.
“You guys know about my dad and losing him in 2024, so it hits home a little bit more different,” she said. “It’s less about the accolade and more about the pain and all that stuff that I kind of had to go through to get here.”
Fever head coach Stephanie White announced Mitchell’s selection in front of the team Friday afternoon.
Las Vegas star A’ja Wilson was named AP Player of the Year for the second straight season. Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier, Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix and Atlanta’s Allisha Gray joined Wilson and Mitchell on the first team.
Indiana opens the WNBA playoffs Sunday at 3 p.m. EDT in Atlanta. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Game 3 will be played in Atlanta, if necessary.
