Since a February trade from the Phoenix Mercury brought their paths together, Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have forged a strong bond as teammates on the Indiana Fever.
Though injuries forced both players to miss the Fever’s run to the WNBA semifinals, Cunningham and Clark played key roles in helping Indiana qualify for the playoffs for the second successive season. Clark was named an All-Star after averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 assists across 13 games played; Cunningham shot a career-best 43.2 percent from 3-point territory in her walk year.
Given her shooting prowess, Cunningham’s free agent market could be robust, especially as she has not committed to return to the Fever. Whether she remains in Indiana past 2025 or not, one thing seems certain: she has developed quite the friendship with Clark.
Cunningham calls Clark a “s— starter”
In a rapid-fire Q&A segment with Front Office Sports, Cunningham was asked who the last person to run her social media profiles would be.
And with zero hesitation whatsoever, Cunningham said it would be Clark: “1,000 percent.”
“She is a s— starter,” Cunningham said. “She would definitely start some stuff on there.”
The humorous remark shows how close Cunningham and Clark have become over the course of 2025 — but it does have a kernel of truth to it.
During her rookie year in 2024, Clark picked up six technical fouls, routinely showing frustration with officials and ending up on technical short of a mandatory one-game suspension.
Cunningham embraced her role as Clark’s “enforcer,” which helped her become a Fever fan favorite — and helped to keep Clark out of trouble. That standing may be tough for Cunningham to leave behind, but her future will be determined whenever the WNBA and the WNBPA reach an understanding over a new CBA, which will in turn decide when the free agency bonanza opens.
