Back in high school, Sara Dickey was only recruited by one Division I school, Evansville. She played four seasons (2014-17) at the Missouri Valley Conference school, winning MVC Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman before earning three All-MVC nods.
Since turning pro, she’s been in high demand, playing basically all over the world. She’s a player who oftentimes flies under the radar because she always puts the team first, even when playing with inexperienced players. That’s what she did in Saudi Arabia. Just look up her stats, wherever she goes, she delivers.
At 28 years old, the humble, funny and down-to-earth Dickey says still figuring out what to do after basketball, as she discussed with Swish Appeal in a recent interview. Below are some highlights from the conversation:
On becoming the focal point of Evansville’s offense:
The coaching staff just put me in great situations and helped me see the situations on the court and also my teammates [were great]. I remember sophomore year, we had a pretty good team. My teammates and my coaching staff, they really helped me get into a very good situation. All the credit to them really.
On her first season in Egypt:
My agent at the time just asked me, “Would you be interested in going to Egypt?” I said, “Yeah, of course.” So then it all worked out. Originally, I got there and I hated it. The first two month were like the worst time I’ve ever had being somewhere playing basketball. It was terrible, but somehow I figured out how to like it. It was just a big adaptation because it’s such a culture shock in the beginning. But yeah, I went there and I played there two seasons. Because I figured out how to like it….I had a great experience there. And once I finished in Saudi Arabia a few weeks ago, I actually went to Egypt for a few days to hang out. It’s got a very special place in my heart.
A special thank you to Thomas Prodromou of Flash Agency for arranging the interview.
