Cary, NC – The singles and doubles main draw finalists are now set at the ITA Women’s All-American Championships after a Saturday full of high-intensity semifinal matchups from the Cary Tennis Park.
In the first singles semifinal match of the day, Maria Sholokhova (Wisconsin) took down Tatum Evans (North Carolina) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to claim her spot in the championship match. After dropping a back-and-fourth first set, Sholokhova relied on her power hitting in the second and third sets to neutralize Evans and turn the tide of the match. Her victory marks the first time a Wisconsin player has reached the finals of the ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
Following on the stadium court just shortly after, Elza Tomase (Tennessee) continued her storybook run in the singles draw taking down Theadora Rabman (North Carolina) 6-4, 6-1 to claim the second and final spot in the singles finals. Beginning in qualifying play, Tomase has won seven straight matches in Cary, showcasing the talent that helped contribute to her team’s advancement to the NCAA Semifinals this past May in Stillwater. Tomase joins Sholokhova as the first player in her program’s history to reach the ITA Women’s All-American Singles Finals.
Meanwhile, in the singles consolation draw, players are still battling it out for the two remaining NCAA Individual Championship qualifying spots (consolation draw finalists). The four remaining players in the consolation draw include Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M), Dasha Vidmanova (Georgia), Julia Fliegner (Michigan), and Sofia Johnson (Old Dominion). These players will have to win just one more match tomorrow to claim their qualifying spot in the NCAA Individual Championships.
The doubles semifinals saw Kimmi Hance/Elise Wagle (UCLA) and Gabriella Broadfoot/Maddy Zampardo (NC State) advance to the ITA All-American Doubles Finals.
For Hance and Wagle, they took down the former Pac-12 pairing of Mao Mushkia and Jessica Alsola (Cal) 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the finals. The duo are looking to become the first UCLA team to win the ITA All-American Championships since Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady did so back in 2013.
In the other doubles semifinal, Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo (NC State) won 7-5, 7-5 over Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper (USC). This pairing marks the second NC State team to reach the ITA All-American doubles finals in the past three seasons joining eventual NCAA Doubles Champions Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki.
Play from the Cary Tennis Park begins at 10 am (EST) with the singles final hitting the court at noon (EST) from the stadium court.
