Third-placed Golden Fireballs delivered a massive blow to perennial Division A leaders, the Free State Crinums, by upsetting them in the final action on Day 1 of the 2024 Telkom Netball League’s Power Week 3 at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
The 2024 Telkom Netball League is entering its final Power Week with exciting matches to determine the top four spots in each division. The last group stage matches will be played on Sunday, June 16, as the competition nears the end of the pool stages.
In a close encounter, the Lilies fought to secure their first win of the tournament. However, in a thrilling third quarter, they only managed to level the score at 41-41, displaying their determination and perseverance.
Despite the Lilies’ efforts, the Diamonds secured a victory by a five-goal margin.
In a tough battle between Division B leaders Eastern Cape Comets and third-placed Western Cape Tornados, the Comets extended their winning streak and solidified their top position in Division B standings.
Meanwhile, KD Stars continued to show dominance over the Mpumalanga Sunbirds in a thrilling match, proving their previous victory was no fluke.
Under the leadership of Precious Mthembu, the team showcased their exceptional skills and determination. Phindile Sithole’s outstanding performance earned her the Player of the Match title for the second time this season.
KD Stars paid tribute to fallen netball hero Mrs. Phindile Thusini by wearing black armbands. Mrs. Thusini, the chairperson of Zululand Netball District Association and KZN Netball Director of Events, tragically lost her life in a car accident on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Our condolences go out to her family and the netball community.
Stings faced a tough challenge against defending champions the Jaguars. The Jaguars initially appeared shaken but bounced back to dominate the Stings with a 20-goal lead at the end of the match. The Jaguars are now preparing for a tough match against the Crinums in the final round-robin.
In the thrilling final match of the day, the Fireballs clashed with the Crinums, achieving a remarkable upset against them in a high-intensity battle.
Although the Fireballs lost the first quarter, they dominated the second, third, and fourth quarters with their defensive prowess and clinical offense, clinching a well-deserved 49-47 victory.
The Gauteng team maintained possession, precision, and accuracy to secure their 49-47 victory.
